History of the Bettie E

Bettie E

The Bettie E was built in Atlantic, N.C. in 1938 and launched in 1939 by famed Carteret County boat builders Ambrose Fulcher and Ervin Robinson. She is a classic Atlantic style Core Sound sink net commercial fishing boat or simply a "Core Sounder."

Core Sounders evolved from the earlier sailing sharpies that had been converted to gas engines. Like the sharpie, the Core Sounder has a plumb stem, low flairing sides, sweeping sheer and a round stern. The round stern made the handling of nets easier and the low sides allowed for the working of crab pots and oyster tongs.

Being an Atlantic, N.C. version of a Core Sounder, the Bettie E has large square ports and a high cabin.
